Cryotherapy works by causing the water in the skin cells to freeze. As this happens the water expands (setting up a crystalline matrix) and then fractures the frozen cell walls causing cellular breakdown.

For our CryoPen treatment we use a pen-like instrument which emits high pressurised, liquid nitrous oxide to target individual skin lesions. Through a fine glass nib we are able to precisely work to a millimetre precision, so only the skin imperfection is destroyed. The nitrous oxide freezes the lesion.

1. Inflammation – redness, slightly itchy, slight swelling (all subject to area of treatment)
2. Proliferation – Within 24-48 hours after treatment a small wheal or possible crust will form as the healing process continues. This is due to the increase in cell production and process through the skin layers. 
3. Tissue Remodelling – As the cells come through to the surface of the skin they will revert to the normal structure, the skin will be remodelling to normal cells with the lesion.

The skin colour will change and eventually re-pigment to the normal colour of the skin. This final process varies from person to person. 

At the stage as the skin re-pigments it is important that SPF50 is used to prevent re- pigment to dark due to fresh cells being exposed to UVA/B light

Preparation

Skin is prepped with an alcohol swab.

Pre care

No main precare necessary however we advise treatment to be organised 6 weeks before any imminent holiday plans.

• Avoid touching the skin for 12 hours post treatment.
• Most healing is straightforward and occurs without problem
• Most healing will take place in 4 to 6 weeks, however it may sometimes take longer than this, as all skin varies, and can take longer to regenerate
• Avoid steam/sauna/swimming/gym/hot showers or any activities to encourage sweating for 24 hours post treatment
• During the healing time you may shower/wash as normal and use your usual cosmetics, including makeup, deodorants and moisturising creams 
• Avoid use of AHA/BHA 48 hours post treatment. 
• Avoid use of retinol, at home skin peels & steroid creams in the area of treatment 7-10 days prior to treatment.
• Any treatments that take longer than 6 weeks to heal may need to be reviewed by your GP or clinic nurse
• If your immune system is compromised, you may still have treatment, BUT healing may take longer, and you may require further treatment 
• Avoid exfoliating for 7-10 days post treatment. (unless given other advice by practitioner)
• Protect skin with SPF 30+ daily.
• If the area treated is tanned, the treatment will remove the tanning and the skin will need to repigment to the tanned colour. The small dry crusting that forms should come away after 4 weeks, if not please wait until it has done so before contacting the clinic
• Avoid direct sun exposure for at least 5-7 days post treatment.
